What Does SOLID Mean?

SOLID means "dependable" or "stupid." It is also an acronym for five principles of software design.

Dependable

The word solid is widely used as a slang term, meaning "dependable" or reliable. For example:

Stupid

Especially in the UK, solid is also used to mean "stupid." For example:

Software Design Principles

In software design and development, SOLID is an acronym that stands for five key design principles used by software engineers:
  • S - Single-responsibility principle.
  • O - Open-closed principle.
  • L - Liskov substitution principle.
  • I - Interface segregation principle.
  • D - Dependency inversion principle.
The SOLID principles were developed in an essay published in 2000, by American software engineer, instructor, and author Robert C. Martin, titled "Design Principles and Design Patterns."
