SCOTUS

The SCOTUS is the highest judicial body in the US. It consists of nine justices who are appointed for life by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Court sits at the Supreme Court Building in Washington DC. It has ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all federal and state cases involving constitutional or federal law, and it serves as the final interpreter of the Constitution. Many of the court's decisions have profoundly shaped American society. The Court's rulings should ensure the balance of power and protect individual rights. However, although it is meant to be neutral, some worry it has recently become politically biased.

SCOTUS is an acronym, because it is formed by taking the initial letters of the words "Supreme Court of the United States" and pronouncing them together as a single word, "scotus."
