An emirate is a territory ruled by an emir, which means "commander" or "leader", but is usually translated as "prince." The UAE is basically a union of seven emirates that joined together in 1971. The best-known of the emirates are Dubai (famous for tourism, skyscrapers, and luxury) and Abu Dhabi (the capital city and home of the F1 track). The other five members are:

  • Sharjah
  • Ajman
  • Umm Al Quwain
  • Ras Al Khaimah
  • Fujairah
But we bet you knew that anyway 🤥😁

In May 2026, the UAE was in the news because it quit OPEC (the Organization of the Oil Exporting Countries).

An Academic Look at UAE

UAE is an initialism, because it's pronounced letter by letter — "U-A-E." It's not an acronym, as they form pronounceable words (abbreviations like NATO, ROWE, TACO). In short: if you can say it like a word, it's an acronym. If you have to spell it out, it's an initialism.
