What Does P2P Mean in a Text?

P2P means "Peer To Peer," "Pay to Play," and "Pay To Progress."

Peer to Peer

The abbreviation P2P is widely used in computing with the meaning "Peer to Peer." In this context, P2P refers to file sharing networks that allow users to connect their online devices (PC, laptop, etc.) directly to those of other users, without passing through a central server.

On P2P networks, users utilize dedicated software to access and copy files on each other's computers, usually whilst allowing equivalent access to their own device. (P2P access is usually restricted to a specific folder or folders.) P2P is widely used to share pirated material.

Pay To Play

In gaming, P2P is often used with the meaning "Pay To Play" (sometimes referred to as Pay For Play). In this context, P2P refers to games for which users must pay a fee in order to be able to play. (This contrasts with F2P (Free To Play).)

Pay To Progress

Also in gaming, P2P is often used with the meaning "Pay To Progress" to refer to the concept that a player can pay real money to advance through a game. This allows players with limited time (or patience) to skip through time-intensive or boring phases of the game.

"Pay To Progress" is a controversial aspect of some games. According to critics, paying to skip contents of a game undermines the whole point of playing it. On the other hand, supporters of P2P claim that not everyone has the time to dedicate to the less interesting aspects of games and no real advantage is gained by paying, just time saved.



"Pay To Progress" is often confused with P2W (Pay To Win). P2P Is often typed "PTP".
