An EREV (or E-REV) is a type of plug-in electric vehicle (EV) that is powered by an electric motor, but which uses a small petrol or diesel generator to produce electricity to charge the battery when it is depleted. Unlike a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), which uses either petrol or diesel fuel as the main power source for the engine and also has has a small electric motor, the petrol or diesel engine in an EREV never drives the wheels. EREVs bridge what was perceived to be a gap between between plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) (i.e., completely electric cars).
